Physical Education

The term Physical Education consists of two words -physical and education. Physical refers to the body in reference to the various characteristics which include physical appearance, physical strength, physical development, physical prowess etc. 'Education' refers to the teaching and learning process.

In the light of the above, physical education can be defined as an educational process concerning activities used for developing and maintaining the body. In other words, when a person is riding, running, playing games, swimming or performing any activity which helps to develop the body, education is taking place in them. The type of education however depends on the kind of training and guidance received during the performance.

Objectives - The following among others are some of the objectives of studying physical education:

  1. Acquisition of proper sports and games skills.
  2. Development of physical fitness.
  3. Provision of a forum for socialisation and fun.
  4. Development of recreational skills and proper use of leisure hours.
  5. Character training.

Scope - The subject covers all physical activities that are performed both indoors and outdoors for social and physical benefits. They include:

  3. Aquatics
  4. Dancing
  5. Hunting
  6. Athletics
  7. Safety Education
  8. Camping
  9. Recreation
  10. Gymnastics
  11. Health
  12. Rhythmic Activities.
